Full speed ahead on EU data protection reform

Redstor posted in News | 17 Feb 2014

The European Commission aims to conduct a comprehensive reform of the EU’s Data Protection rules in order to strengthen the data privacy rights of consumers. Europe needs to adopt much harsher penalties for businesses that breach Data Protection laws.

EU Justice Commissioner, Viviane Reding, highlighted the lack of severity in the penalties, noting that although France and Spain have both fined Internet giant, Google, these finals totalled up to 0.0003% of Google’s global turnover. Quite clearly barely an indent, and described well by Reding as “pocket money”.

A proposal to update data protection regulations and to tighten restrictions on the use and flow of data has kept EU officials at loggerheads for months, with the deadline of May 2014 likely to be extended. Current suggestions include that should a company fail to comply with the new data protection rules, they could be fined up to 5% of total revenue. Currently, the exact proposals for the new regulation are unknown, however it is clear that the regulations will be policed heavily.
