The start of the year is the perfect time for setting new goals and projects and finding those New Year’s resolutions that can help you along the way. With so many cyber-security threats claiming high-profile victims in 2017, isn't it time you ensure you're protected? At Redstor we’ve had 20 years’ experience in managing and protecting data, so we’ve come up with some new years resolutions to help you stay protected.

Identify and mitigate risk

Risk can quickly turn into costly issues for organisations when something goes wrong. The risk of downtime, data loss, fines for non-compliance with regulations or of having to pay a ransom are just a few of the possibilities. When speaking to cyber-security experts, an area that is always highlighted is the ability for organisations to identify and mitigate risks before they become issues. Resolving to do this at least once a quarter will improve cyber-security processes and may also highlight where IT can become more efficient.

Data protection lead

Data protection will be one of the stand out themes of 2018. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) promises to shake up how organisations protect data and what processes should be in place. Having a Data Protection Officer (DPO) or member of staff who has a firm understanding of legislation will help to guide processes and policies internally and ensure that Data Protection Legislation and Regulations are adhered to.

Backup, DR and Archiving planning and policies

Successfully managing data throughout its lifecycle requires different tools at various stages, however it is vital to have additional copies of data available to recover from in the event of loss. The New Year is a wonderful time to review organisational data lifecycle policies, review solutions and ensure that data is securely protected. Backups should be secure, off-site and automated if possible, reducing the risk of human error and allowing for recovery on-demand. Disaster Recovery should be planned more strategically to ensure recovery point and recovery time objectives (RTOs and RPOs) can be met in the event of a site loss. Archiving may not be in use within all organisations however it gives the ability to tier data, migrate data to secondary storage platforms and to store data for long-term retention.

Commit to regular reviews

Setting New Year's resolutions is great but sticking with them is another matter. It is important to have a plan and stick to it, part of this includes scheduling regular review sessions to understand hprogression is being made and to set new targets if necessary. This will help improve planning and processes and ensure that come the end of 2018, business goals and IT targets have been met.
