Detention for one school for data loss

Detention for one school for data loss

posted in Cyber-SecurityCyber-Security ● 15 Jul 2011

A school in Oldham has breached strict new laws put in place by the Information Commisioner’s Office (ICO) after an unencrypted laptop was stolen from a teacher’s car whilst parked outside their home. This ultimately resulted in sensitive data relating to 90 pupils at the school falling into rogue hands. In an all too familiar scenario, the ICO found that the school was “unaware of the need to encrypt portable storage devices, although it did have a policy in place informing staff that storage devices should not be kept in cars when away from the school premises”. The school’s headteacher has now signed an agreement with the ICO that they will now encrypt all personal storage devices and all staff will be trained on the necessity to encrypt data. This situation could have all been avoided, simply by the school using RBUSS Mobile. This is a unique, 5 in 1 service that includes Remote Data Deletion, Device Trace, Encryption, Port Access Control and Backup. If your school needs to evaluate your encryption standards, you can either call Redstor’s Head Office on +44 118 951 5200 or e-mail Redstor.
