BMW has patched a security flaw that affected 2.2 million cars – including Rolls Royce and Mini models. The flaw which was identified by German motorist association, ADAC, concerned BMW’s ConnectedDrive software which controls door locks, A/C and traffic updates.
Security researchers were able to intercept data from the car and use it to open doors and wind down windows. ADAC proposed that this security flaw would ensure that criminals would need only a few minutes to unlock cars and drive away – leaving no physical trace of unauthorised entry.
Thankfully no cars were hacked prior to BMW’s patch. BMW resolved the issue by encrypting data from the car via a HTTPS – the same security used in online banking and by Redstor in our services.
The Internet of Things boasts great opportunities, however it also poses substantial risks. Consumers and businesses alike need to ensure they take the necessary security steps to keep themselves and their information safe and must treat data security as an essential component of their business strategy, not merely as something that must be ticked off on a compliance sheet.
