The ICO investigate LG after Data Protection Act breach claims

Redstor posted in News | 29 Nov 2013

UK based IT consultant, Jason Huntley, revealed that LG smart TV’s are recording viewing preferences even when privacy settings are activated. Huntley discovered that in addition to his viewing preferences, LG even recorded private files stored on his external USB drives and the information was sent over the Internet back to LG in a clear text, unencrypted format easily accessible by anyone.

“We will be making enquiries into the circumstances of the alleged breach of the Data Protection Act before deciding what action, if any, needs to be taken,” an ICO spokesman said. The fact remains however that even if LG is not using the data, it remains unencrypted online in plain text, easily accessible by hackers.

Companies must make sure that any personal information they hold is stored in an encrypted format, and must be careful that they do not store unnecessary personal information to ensure compliance with the Data Protection Act.  Breach of The Data Protection Act may result in criminal prosecutions, published undertakings and fines of up to £500,000. This in turn can cause various repercussions including loss of business and damage to reputation. When storing data with Redstor, data is encrypted at your site, prior to transit, and only you have access to the encryption key. This means no one, not even us, can access your data.
