NHS Data Breaches
A report by Big Brother Watch has revealed that the NHS has suffered thousands of data breaches since 2011, as many as 6 a day, totalling 7255.
Upon further investigation by Big Brother Watch, at least 103 of these are a result of data loss or theft, 236 were caused by data being shared inappropriately via email and 251 were due to data being shared inappropriately with a third party.
Big Brother Watch Director, Emma Carr commented on the seriousness of these breaches by saying, “The information held in medical records is of huge personal significance and for details to be wrongly disclosed, maliciously accessed or lost is completely unacceptable.”
With the Government's plans to create a paperless NHS by 2017, this report is even more worrying. The digitalised NHS will potentially enable an ever-increasing number of people to gain access to patients’ information, and thus the threat and potential impact of data breaches is likely to increase. If the government is to make NHS data more accessible, then this must go hand in hand with greater regulation and penalties for those who abuse that access.
