Worry that 'sexting' is the norm for teens

A report by the NSPCC and Childline released today uncovers the popularity of ‘sexting’ amongst teenagers. The poll revealed 40% had taken indecent images or videos of themselves and 25% had sent that content to another. Shockingly, 15% had sent an indecent image or video to a complete stranger. As discussed in a previous post  by Redstor, 'sexting' or the posting of sexually explicit content online continues to increase.  This exposure of sexual images and videos of teens on mobile devices poses a real threat to all involved; the teenagers themselves, parents and school staff. In a response to a poll on the subject Peter Wanless, Head of NSPCC, voiced his shock at the report saying that “sexting is almost becoming the norm”.

There is an urgent need for greater awareness and education on the creation and sharing of inappropriate content in digital form. Redstor’s E-safety service (powered by Securus) provides school staff and parents with the ability to proactively protect children from harm online. E-safety captures inappropriate words, phrases and images on a computer and records examples of harmful behaviour. If such content is detected, the carer will be alerted, helping them to perform their duty of care and ensuring the child is kept safe. Additionally, the service ensures that highly experienced child protection professionals are available throughout the year to support those worried about a particular situation and needing advice on appropriate action. E-safety (powered by Securus) encourages teenagers to adopt safe behaviour whilst using technologies and promotes long term digital citizenship. The intelligent service gives adults the power to protect teenagers while demonstrating a proactive approach to protecting those involved.
