Three simple steps to protect yourself from Gameover Zeus and Cryptolocker

The UK’s National Crime Agency has identified a Russian group behind the Gameover Zeus and CryptoLocker ransomware and has warned British citizens they have a 2 week window to ensure all devices are patched and secure before the cybercriminals regain control. The NCA and the FBI worked together to disrupt both the Gameover Zeus and the Cryptolocker virus, which combined have already accumulated over £100 million from victims across the world and are thought to have already infected over 15,000 UK devices.

The viruses work in a similar way with victims machines being infected via phishing emails and malicious links. Gameover Zeus, once on a computer, silently tracks and steals information form the victim. The information stolen ranges from online banking credentials and credit card numbers to login details for websites. Cryptolocker on the other hand encrypts your files and requires a ransom be paid for the private key to decrypt the data. If the ransom is not paid by the deadline, then all your data is deleted.

These viruses are particularly harmful to small businesses where employee devices hold personal and detailed information of their customers, partners and business processes. If infected, the damage to your organisation will be financial and reputational. So, what steps can you take to protect and secure your data from the attack?

Firstly, ensure that you have appropriate security software installed upon your devices. The high number of phishing attacks experienced every year means that it has never been more important to have security software installed which scans links and attachments to guarantee they're safe before you open them.

Secondly, update your operating system. Malware often takes advantage of known vulnerabilities in operating systems and as such, vendors such as Microsoft regularly administer software updates to address the vulnerabilities. If you are still running Windows XP on your devices, it is time to move away, and quickly.

Thirdly, back up your documents securely and remotely. Through the implementation of a secure, reliable backup system, users can ensure that no sensitive or personal files are lost. This is where Redstor can help.

Redstor’s Online Backup service provides organisations with secure, remote data backup, protecting data against accidental loss or malicious theft or deletion.
