Move back to traditional textbooks?

Schools are being called to reintroduce textbooks amidst fears that Britain’s kids are lagging behind those in Europe and the Middle East.

Nick Gibb, the school’s minister, believes working from textbooks can give children a more structured education, save money and more easily enable parents to help children with their homework.

These claims come amidst concerns that teachers are over using photocopies that are lengthy to produce as well as easily lost. However, avoiding over-copying vast quantities of work sheets doesn't necessarily require a return to textbooks, it does however suggest a more efficient means of distributing and collecting work is required.

Using technology intelligently could easily provide a cost-effective and far more flexible solution to an old problem. This is where Redstor can help. Our Centrastor service offers secure cloud storage, file sharing and collaboration from an intuitive central management console, so teachers, senior management teams and students never need to be without easy, secure access to documents again.

Accessible from virtually any device with an Internet connection, Centrastor grants access to data as if it was stored locally on the machine. Files can be shared with time limited and project based rules, allowing teachers to intelligently distribute work to pupils, taking into account differing student abilities, something which is more difficult through the use of standardised textbooks.

Teachers are enablers and should be free to focus on enabling education and teaching. Utilising technology will enable them to teach in a manner that is consistent with the 21st century and in a way which is engaging and beneficial to students. Children love to use technology, not just because it is 'cool' but because it enables self-learning and equips them well for working life. The added benefit of using Centrastor is that teachers can re-use and adapt work easily and quickly to best suit a specific pupil or a group's learning objectives.

As with all Redstor's services, data stored with Centrastor is stored in UK-based data centres and in accordance with our ISO 27001 and 9001 certifications. Our range of secure and encrypted cloud services are already protecting the data of 10,000 schools across the UK.
