Islington Council fined
Islington Council were fined £70,000 by the ICO after it inadvertently published intimate details of over 2000 of it's residents online. The council uploaded the information to the "What Do They Know" website and this revealed private details of residents including housing needs, domestic abuse and mental illness history.Head of enforcement at the ICO, Stephen Eckersley said:"This mistake not only placed sensitive personal information relating to residents at risk, but also highlighted the lack of training and expertise within the council. Councils are trusted with sensitive personal information and residents are right to expect it to be handled in a proper way. Unfortunately, in this case that did not happen, and Islington Council must now explain to residents how it will stop these mistakes being repeated."Making matters worse, the council were alerted to their error shortly after the upload, yet still failed to remove the information. They then continued to upload 2 further documents containing the same errors. This revelation once again highlights the importance of correctly protecting critical data. It is not only the risk of heavy fines, up to £500,000, but the long term damage to trust and reputation.Redstor’s range of secure, cloud services can protect your business's data and reduce the risk of human error.
