A security flaw in Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser has been discovered, leaving users at serious risk. The flaw allows hackers to gain the same rights as the user enabling them to add and remove software, change passwords, delete data and create new user accounts for example.
This vulnerability affects v6 – 11 of Internet Explorer, estimated to be the browser of choice for over half of the worlds Internet users. Microsoft are working on a patch to address this issue, which will be made available shortly and has admitted that it is aware of limited, but targeted attacks on browsers. US and UK Governments have advised that until the patch for this vulnerability is released, users should use alternative browsers, such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.
This is the first issue that XP users will have faced following Microsoft ceasing support for the OS last month. Windows XP users are being advised to use alternative browsers or upgrade their operating system to a newer version to decrease their risk of being hacked. Due to the amount of confidential information held, this vulnerability poses a significant risk to businesses as hackers could easily gain access to valuable data. Again, the advice is the same – be vigilant and use an alternative browser until the patch is administered.
