The police, the NHS, Councils and other public sector organisations have been fined over £2m by the ICO over the past 18 months due to poor data handling practices. These fines stem from the the ICO being given the ability to levy fines up to the value of £500,000 in April 2011. The purpose of these fines is to encourage organisations to ensure that the data they store is adequately protected against theft and accidental data leakages. Many of these fines are as a result of devices and storage media being lost or stolen and data being taken offsite unencrypted. In response to these continuing errors, the ICO is seeking increased powers namely the ability to conduct audits in local government and NHS sectors.Redstor’s range of services including secure online backup, secure data storage, laptop backup and encryption help to mitigate these risks. Redstor’s cloud backup services for example, eliminate the need to take backup tapes offsite unencrypted. Redstor’s cloud storage services meanwhile, including the soon to be released Centrastor provide secure access-anywhere storage. To find out how Redstor could assist you in protecting against data leakage, contact us today.
