The roots of Youth Day can be traced back to the Soweto Uprising of 1976, a watershed moment in South African history. During this time, the apartheid government enforced the use of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in schools, suppressing the indigenous languages and cultures of Black students. The decision sparked widespread protests and resistance, led predominantly by students in Soweto, a township near Johannesburg.
On June 16, 1976, thousands of students took to the streets to march peacefully against the oppressive education system. Their peaceful demonstration was met with brutal force from the authorities, resulting in violent clashes and tragic loss of life. Among the victims was 13-year-old Hector Pieterson, whose iconic image captured by photographer Sam Nzima became a symbol of the struggle against apartheid.

Redstor Academy
In partnership with Edunova, Redstor had officially launched an ESG programcalled the Redstor Academy on March 8th, demonstrating its dedication to uplifting the youth in South Africa. Edunova, an edtech delivery entity, is currently assisting Redstor in facilitating a coding and robotics program for over 200+ students in Mpumalanga, marking the beginning of a transformative journey.
The Redstor Academy program is not just a short-term initiative but a long-term commitment. The goal is to nurture and develop students’ skills and passion for technology, guiding them towards pursuing successful careers in this ever-evolving field. Redstor envisions being a necessary and welcomed partner, bridging both the resource and skills gap that currently exists.
Recognising the pressing need for accessible digital education, Redstor’s Academy ESG project takes a holistic approach to empower young individuals in the digital age. By leveraging technology as an enabler, Redstor aims to democratise access to education, ensuring that no one is left behind. Through collaborative efforts with stakeholders across various sectors, Redstor Academy strives to bridge the skills gap. Partnerships with educational institutions bring expertise and resources, enhancing the quality of the program. Additionally, mentorship programs provide students with guidance and support, helping them navigate their journey and make informed career choices.
