Often talked about among the daily challenges faced by organizations is the ‘explosion of data’, but what does this mean and are you experiencing it?

Data is growing, that’s a fact. As businesses and other organizations utilize technology in more ways than ever, data is created from hundreds of sources. This data is often stored in cloud applications, online portals or may only exist on a temporary basis. But as users create and store increasing amounts of data locally or on business systems, capacity issues can start to creep in.

Where is the explosion of data coming from?

Data is growing rapidly. Technology is used more than ever in both our professional and personal lives and the number of devices that create data is on the rise. While we may personally only create relatively small amounts of data on a daily basis, the global figures are astounding. There are currently 2.5 quintillion bytes (18 zero’s) of data being created a day; that’s around 2,500 petabytes. Technology trends and developments like the Internet of Things (IoT) and social media contribute heavily to this growth and are only likely to increase further. Over 90% of the data currently in existence was created in the last 2-years.

IoT has been an industry buzzword and a promise of innovation for several years now. The process of making everyday items ‘smart’ aims to connect more aspects of life to improve efficiencies and quality of living. What this means, in reality, is that everyday items are connected to the internet and equipped with sensors, trackers, cameras, microphones… the list could go on. These pieces of equipment collect data which in turn helps some sort of ‘smart’ decision to be made or reflected by the device, this data must then be stored, collected and is often analysed, creating yet more data.

The last two decades have seen a meteoric rise in the use of mobile technology, changing the way that people access information. Information is now easily accessible wherever we are, and only a few clicks away. In 2017, the number of internet connected devices surpassed the human population for the first time, paving the way for Gartner’s prediction of 20 billion connected devices by 2020. Over half of web searches are now made on mobile devices.

Google conducts 3,607,080 searches every minute of every day. This equates to around 3.5 billion searches a day and of course, does not account for searches made using alternate providers.

Social media is another area giving rise to vast quantities of data. As users log in and create new content, data is generated and stored across storage systems. The figures behind this quickly start to show just how much data this is; Per minute of the day, there are 46,740 new images posted to Instagram, more than half a million images shared via snapchat and more than 450,000 tweets. Facebook in itself has 2 billion active users – more than 25% of the world population.

Keeping up

Protecting and managing data has always presented challenges for organizations. There is a need to ensure compliance, retain control and often not to spend large amounts in doing so. With data growing at such a rate, the task of protecting data only becomes more difficult. Data must be managed and protected across multiple sources, in multiple formats and importantly organizations need the ability to protect all data, not just a subset.

Organizations need solutions that are flexible enough to deal with the proliferation of data and multiple sources and locations of data. Solutions also need to be scalable to deal with the growth of data – traditional hardware-based approaches are less likely to be suitable, pushing organizations towards cloud solutions. With the growing complexity of managing large data sets, solutions will also need to be able to centralize management and give easy to use reporting functionality.

Unified protection

With the need to protect data from a multitude of threats, organizations will often implement several strategies to keep data safe. Throughout the lifecycle of data, different solutions may even be required, but this, in turn, can become complex and costly to manage. Redstor unifies backup and recovery, archiving and disaster recovery into a centralized, highly secure solution taking away the pains associated with managing and protecting data and giving organizations peace of mind in their data protection.
