Pedophiles blackmailing children as young as 8 years old online
An investigation by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) centre over 2 years has revealed a large number of online sexual blackmail cases involving children in the UK. The perpetrators pose as children of similar ages to their victims through the use of fake online profiles. The criminals build a relationship with the child over a period of time, convincing them to expose sexual images or videos of themselves. They then threaten or blackmail the children to continue interacting with them online in fear that the previous pictures or videos will be exposed online or sent to friends or family.
CEOP have revealed that children as young as 8 are being targeted and that this blackmail in some cases results in children seriously self-harming and making attempts upon their own life. In some of the cases reported, the young people in question were forced to pay the attacker to stop the threats. Services such as Redstor E-Safety actively protect children online by monitoring for keywords and images which fall within risk categories. A designated person is then notified and is able to act upon this information in the event that a risk is identified. Going above protecting children online, E-Safety also captures risks offline such as text typed into a document and then deleted.
