NHS Disaster Recovery Failure
Scotland’s largest health board, which covers more than 10 hospitals, was left with 3 days of data loss after a server crash on the 30th September. This rendered staff unable to access patient records causing 590 treatments and appointments to be postponed; including chemotherapy, day surgery and in patient procedures.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde failed to take the consequences of a system failure seriously and were not adequately prepared for a disaster recovery. Many businesses are not making disaster recovery a priority until data loss is experienced, despite the high associated costs. A report by Ponemon Institute in 2011 estimated these costs to be as high as or even in excess of £186,000 per hour for large corporations and suggested that the average business experienced 14 hours of downtime per year.
