Cyber bullying on the increase
2013 saw an 87% increase in children contacting Childline regarding cyber bullying from 2012. The charity also reported increases in racist bullying, self-harm and suicidal thoughts at 69%, 41% and 33% respectively since 2012. Childlines founder, Esther Rantzen said: “far too many of the nation’s children seem to be struggling and in despair. It’s so important that we support children to talk about issues and look out for signs that they’re not able to cope.”
Educating children about how to stay safe online is no longer a desirable ‘add-on’ – it’s an essential part of child protection. Within schools, Ofsted places a strong emphasis on safeguarding, assessing how school leaders ensure their pupils are safe online. So, how can we safeguard children in this digital age? The answer lies in Redstor Safeguarding, in partnership with Securus Software. Securus Software is the only school monitoring system to be developed and overseen by child protection specialists detecting issues such as:
- Racial, homophobic and religious harassment
- Indicators of distress
- Inappropriate language
- Online grooming and sexual abuse
- Explicit images
The software works by identifying potential child protection issues online, empowering schools to provide an immediate informed response on issues which may otherwise go undetected.
