Safer Internet Day

As many as 1 in 7 children admitted to bullying others online in a survey revealed by Action for Children today. 40% of the 2,000 respondents said they bullied others to avoid being targeted themselves and many admitted that they did so in order to fit into a certain social group.

Deanna Neilson, Action for Children’s Head of Child Protection said “Low self-esteem, stress at school or being victimised themselves by peers or adults are all reasons a child might act out on others". It is important for parents to ask children about the day they’ve had online – whether your child is a victim of bullying, or bullying others, this and any potentially more severe issues surrounding it, must be addressed.

The survey also revealed that 50% of children did not tell anyone if they read or saw something online that made them feel uncomfortable. Redstor Safeguarding, powered by Securus Software, highlights potential child protection issues by detecting inappropriate content in the form of text or images, whether online or offline, that appears on the screen of a school device. When inappropriate content is detected, a screenshot is taken and the appropriate person notified so that action can be taken, thus empowering schools to provide an immediate informed response on issues which may otherwise go undetected. The software detects issues such as:

  • Bullying
  • Racial, homophobic and religious harassment
  • Indicators of distress
  • Inappropriate language
  • Online grooming and sexual abuse
  • Explicit images

Many technologies adopt the walled garden approach, actively blocking access to content deemed inappropriate. Whilst this does to some extent reduce access to inappropriate material, it also eliminates opportunities for learning about safeguarding issues. A further flaw of this approach is that it produces a great number of false positives and consequently restricts access to a large amount of information which is harmless and would be educational in value. Redstor Safeguarding adopts a different approach and meets Ofsted recommendations by allowing pupils to use the latest technologies safely whilst ensuring that any safeguarding issues are captured, supporting a school's legal duty of care.
