Is the safeguarding of teachers neglected in schools?
BBC Newsbeat issued a Freedom of Information request to 200 Local Authorities, of which 137 responded, revealing nearly a thousand claims have been brought against teachers for having sex with pupils since 2008. Despite the age of consent being 16 years, a law passed in 2001 making it illegal for any adult in a position of trust, such as a teacher, to have sex with a person under 18 years of age.
The National Union of Teachers (NUT) and The Association of Teachers and Lecturers believe anyone who abuses their position of trust should face the full force of the law. They do however have serious concerns over false accusations. If false accusations are brought against a teacher, the repercussions can have long lasting effects on the teacher’s reputation and potentially ruin their career. Christine Blower, Secretary of the NUT said “there can be misunderstandings and malicious allegations are made, so it is critical investigations are carried out quickly with due process.”
Ofsted have made safeguarding in schools a key factor in their inspection reports to the extent that safeguarding is a limiting factor and schools that do not have adequate safeguarding procedures in place can only achieve a rating of needs improvement. While this does address the safety of students, it does not address the safeguarding of teachers and other school staff. Redstor Safeguarding service includes intelligent device monitoring which captures and flags inappropriate content that appears on a screen, including messages which are typed offline. This enables schools to identify genuine child safety issues. Of equal importance, the service enables schools to identify malicious accusations made against teachers as well of instances where teachers are being bullied by pupils or their parents.
