Reading Power Cut
On the afternoon of Monday 10th August 2015 in Reading Town Centre, just a short walk from the Redstor Head Office, a potentially serious electrical fire resulted in a number of large office blocks being evacuated and without electricity for several hours and into the following day.
Other buildings nearby, including the Redstor HQ, had a very short interruption to their power supply, although Redstor have protection from our UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) and therefore continued to work unaffected.
Due to Redstor's redundant facilities in Slough and Reading, even a lengthy power outage in Reading would have had no impact on the uptime of Redstor's cloud platform, however the power outage illustrates the importance of effective disaster recovery and business continuity planning.
One of the businesses up the road that suffered a lengthy power outage uses Redstor for offsite backup and cloud disaster recovery, thus they were able to restart critical business services in the cloud within minutes of the outage occurring, resulting in the outage having minimal impact on their business.
For other businesses without adequate DR protection, the outage was likely significantly more costly.
