The latest on EU Data Protection Reforms
The European Commission aims to conduct a comprehensive reform of the EU's Data Protection rules in order to strengthen the data privacy rights of consumers. A proposal to create updated regulation to tighten restrictions on the use and flow of data has kept EU officials at loggerheads for months, with the deadline of May 2014 likely to be extended. Current suggestions include that should a company fail to comply with the new data protection rules, they could be fined up to 5% of total revenue. The reforms also involve non-compliance fines for international firms who do not comply with restrictions.
Multi-national corporations such as Google will be prohibited from handing users data to authorities outside of the EU without permission from Data Protection authorities. Currently, the exact proposals for the new regulation are unknown, however it is clear that the regulations will be policed heavily.
