ICO reveals top industries for data breaches

The Information Commisioners Office (ICO) revealed the 3 industries responsible for the highest number of data breaches are Health, Local Government and Education. Even more disturbingly, the main cause of these were due to human error! The ICO investigated data breaches during April-June 2013, and found that 175 counts occurred due to "exposing information by accident". The ICO are toughening up on data breaches, with the cost of fines doubling since 2011, and reaching £2.6million in 2013.The ICO can enforce fines of up to £500,000 for data breaches. However, the business needs to calculate the true cost of a data breach, not just a heavy fine but the loss of trust by consumers and potential long term damage also. The cost of lost intellectual property, such as brand,  is not one to be taken lightly either.Redstor's range of secure, cloud services can protect your businesses data and abolish the risk of human error. Our Online Backup service helps ensure data is safely backed up offsite in an encrypted format.
