In our Friday blog post we discussed the potential security risks of BYOD and the impact it has on workplaces. Unfortunately, it is not just the private sector that’s capable of falling foul of insufficient data security in relation to BYOD. A number of public sector organisations are proven examples of why secure, centralised data management needs to be in place. There have been a number of recent cases where the ICO has fined public sector organisations due to a lack of data security. This is especially worrying for sectors such as health care or children’s services.
The ICO has the power to issue undertakings, charge fines (up to £500,000) or even impose criminal sanctions if they find an organisation guilty of failing to protect personal data. The highest fine yet delivered by the ICO to a public sector organisation totalled £325,000 for a severe data breach regarding patients medical records. Public sector organisations often hold sensitive and delicate personal information including details of vulnerable children and adults so the need to keep this data secure is very high. At the same time, the number of public sector workers working remotely is steadily increasing and so therefore are the risks of data being stored or managed unsecurely.
Redstor’s Centrastor service enables centralised management of all organisation data on employee owned devices. To enable efficient working, Centrastor provides encrypted, file sync and share. Furthermore, it provides an audit trail and offers remote device swipe should the need occur.
Security and data protection are at the forefront of Redstor’s offerings and we promise full compliance with the Data Protection Act. Redstor’s Online Backup service ensures data is safely backed up offsite in an encrypted format and our CentraStage service enables support providers to guarantee that devices they support are regularly audited, patched and safely up-to-date for effective endpoint management.
