Information makes the world go round. It is at the heart of every successful organisation, and that’s why keeping it safe is so vital: no information, no organisation. This is the philosophy upon which, Co-Founder and Business Development Director, Tony Ruane and myself built Redstor, a provider of cloud services such as online backup, centralised asset management and e-safety. The inception of Redstor occurred in 1998 and the business originally started out as an integrator, offering on-site backup solutions to businesses nationwide. After immediate success and aggressive growth, we soon found ourselves installing the first Storage Area Networks (SANs) in the UK along with other backup, archiving, mirroring and disaster recovery solutions for large corporates. In 2001 we had the vision that one day our customers would access data like electricity and we called this future service data ‘on tap’. It’s now known as cloud storage or online backup. We went to get funding but due to the dot com implosion our term sheets were pulled by the VCs and this then led to a period of retrenchment and reflection at Redstor. We wanted to steer away from the ground hog day of peaks and troughs in our revenue, which was a natural consequence of providing bespoke solutions and get to a point where our income was recurring. In addition, we soon came to realise that the solutions we were providing were becoming technically easier to implement and that the real cost being incurred by our customers was in the on-going management of their data growth by in-house IT specialists. So it was therefore a natural progression for Redstor to move into monitoring and managing the hardware and software we had sold by acting as outsourced storage administrators. Over the years, Redstor gained invaluable experience from providing and managing thousands of storage solutions and so it was inevitable that we would use this experience to revive our online backup /data ‘on tap’ idea. In 2005, we began to build our own storage platform, with a view to offering online data storage services to our customers.
