Discs containing information from 3 of the UK’s most sensitive inquiries have been lost in the post, with no idea of their current whereabouts.
The discs contained sensitive information relating to the role of the police in the deaths of 3 members of the public, Robert Hamill, Mark Duggan and Azelle Rodney.
It was realised that the discs were missing on January 8th 2015. 3 weeks of intensive searching has yet to result in the missing discs being recovered. Pending further investigation by the ICO, there is no indication that the discs are missing due to malicious intent. A member of staff has been suspended.
The Ministry of Defence said in a statement, “The government takes information security extremely seriously, and this incident is a breach of the arrangements that should be in place.” Given the breadth of technologies available to securely share data, it is inconceivable as to why a member of staff would use such antiquated methods to share such sensitive information.
There are numerous more secure and more effective means by which highly sensitive information such as this could be shared. Redstor’s Centrastor service, for example, delivers secure file sharing, storage and collaboration which features advanced 256-bit AES encryption and two factor authentication.
Files can be shared with time-limited and project based rules, with a variety of permission levels enabling staff to effectively share files securely whilst allowing IT admins to audit and track access.
As with all Redstor’s services, data stored with Centrastor is stored in UK-based data centres and in accordance with our ISO 27001 and 9001 certifications. Our range of secure and encrypted cloud services are already protecting the data of 10,000 organisations across the UK. Redstor’s Online Backup service ensures data is safely backed up offsite in an encrypted format. Our CentraStage service enables support providers to guarantee that devices they support are regularly audited, patched and safely up-to-date for effective endpoint management. Our Virtual Disaster Recovery service guarantees to have your systems up and running within minutes following a disaster.
