Discs containing information from 3 of the UK’s most sensitive inquiries have been lost in the post, with no idea of their current whereabouts.
The discs contained sensitive information relating to the role of the police in the deaths of 3 members of the public, Robert Hamill, Mark Duggan and Azelle Rodney.
It was realised that the discs were missing on January 8th 2015. 3 weeks of intensive searching has yet to result in the missing discs being recovered. Pending further investigation by the ICO, there is no indication that the discs are missing due to malicious intent. A member of staff has been suspended.
The Ministry of Defence said in a statement, “The government takes information security extremely seriously, and this incident is a breach of the arrangements that should be in place.” Given the breadth of technologies available to securely share data, it is inconceivable as to why a member of staff would use such antiquated methods to share such sensitive information.
