Data breach at The Racing Post

Data breach at The Racing Post

posted in Backup & RecoveryBackup & Recovery ● 14 Jul 2015

The Racing Post has confirmed a “sophisticated, sustained and aggressive” attack took place over the weekend that resulted in a database containing customer details being hacked. It cannot yet be confirmed how many customers are affected, though the number is suspected to be tens of thousands. The Racing Post has assured customers that all password details were stored in an encrypted format, but incase hackers can break the encryption, customers are urged to change  their passwords across all websites where they may have used the same or similar password. The Racing Post guarantees users that no financial information has been compromised and promise to adopt new measures to prevent this occurring again.

As criminals become more inventive in their quest to appropriate data it becomes increasingly important to ensure that you are doing all you can to protect personal information. Many companies claim they encrypt passwords however they often are actually using hashing techniques or their encryption levels are not to industry standards. If such is the case at The Racing Post, it will be simple enough for the hackers to recover the passwords. When storing data with Redstor, data is encrypted at your site, prior to transit, and only you have access to the encryption key. This means no one, not even us, can access your data. We store data in 2 geographically separate UK locations and once the data is on our platform it remains encrypted at all times.

Redstor is 100% privately UK owned and based, and can guarantee your customer’s data privacy will not be breached. Security and data protection are at the forefront of Redstor’s offerings and we promise full compliance with the Data Protection Act. Redstor’s range of secure, encrypted services for the public and private sectors ensure that the burden of maintaining compliance with the Data Protection Act is made easier and can be achieved more cost-effectively.
