2016 truly was a “horror film” of a year (ransomware attacks, cyber extortions, data security threats to name a few), all culminating in regrettable loss valuable data. The rate at which the number of ransomware attacks grew in 2016 was the cause of large quantities of data being lost and data security being compromised. 2016 was the year of data security threats, so let us learn from this and take preventative action to safeguard all data in 2017. Here are 5 data security New Year Resolutions to ensure you do everything you can to maintain the security of your data:
It sounds simple really, doesn’t it? But surprisingly enough a substantial amount of data loss can be attributed to backup intervals being too long. When a compromise occurs between backups, all the new data created since the last backup will be lost. Regularly backing up your data can prevent such an unfortunate (and unnecessary) disaster.
Not only is it important to regularly back up your data; doing frequent data integrity checks of backed up data is a must. There is no point in having regular scheduled backups but the integrity of the data is compromised. Doing regular data recovery fire drills will definitely contribute to ensuring that data is kept as secure as possible as well as available anywhere, anytime. Credible backup solution providers are able to perform this type of testing on a daily basis on your behalf.
Making sure that the correct data is selected for backup is probably one of the most important backup protocols to follow. What is the use of backing up regularly, but none of the important data on your machine is selected for backup? Be familiar with your data and what you have selected to be backed up. Regularly audit this data selection to ensure that nothing is left out by accidental omission. Failing to routinely audit backup data selections will definitely not contribute to data security, but can rather be seen as “data negligence”.

Cloud-to-cloud backup is essential for protecting data created by SaaS applications. The security of data stored in the cloud relies on a comprehensive backup and disaster recovery plan. For the sake of safeguarding data stored in the cloud, ensure that the data is backed up to a different location.
Implementing data archiving best practices is beneficial for the data life-cycle. Allowing stagnant data to consume primary storage space is not sustainable. Archiving to a secure data storage facility will ensure that data is available when you need it, whilst at the same time minimising overheads. This way the backup data set also becomes smaller which in turn optimises the time it takes to complete a backup.
