Worrying increase in cyber bullying

Worrying increase in cyber bullying

posted in Education ● 7 Oct 2013

Anti Bullying charity ‘Ditch the Label’ published a report last week which shows that 69% of the 10,000 young people surveyed had experienced cyber bullying. This figure is much higher than previously reported showing a worrying increase from previous reported figures and indicates a need to educate young people in digital citizenship. It is important to educate young people on the implications of their online behaviour and advance understanding of how to behave safely and securely. Encouraging practice of safe behaviour will ensure young people are well equipped to become responsible digital citizens that can not only keep themselves safe, but help others too.

Regardless of how we educate our young people, there will still unfortunately be those who take part in cyber bullying. Redstor’s E-safety service (powered by Securas) provides school staff with the ability to identify e-safety issues, strengthen e-safety practice and better educate staff, parents and pupils.  The service works by capturing inappropriate words, phrases and images which appear on screen and records examples of harmful behaviour.  If inappropriate content is detected, staff are alerted helping them to perform to their duty of care. Child protection professionals are available throughout the year to support teachers who are worried about a particular situation and need advice on what action to take. It also encourages students to adopt safer habits whilst using technologies enabling them to learn how to stay safe in situations outside of a controlled environment. This intelligent service gives teachers the power to demonstrate proactive duty of care to really help the victims and crack down on cyber bullying.

Redstor’s Backup for schools service ensures data is safely backed up offsite in an encrypted format. Our cloud sync and share service, Centrastor, enables organisations to store and share files securely online from any device with an Internet connection and our CentraStage service enables support providers to guarantee that devices they support are regularly audited, patched and safely up-to-date for effective endpoint management. Our Virtual Disaster Recovery service guarantees to have your systems up and running within minutes following a disaster.
