File Sharing in the Legal Sector

File Sharing in the Legal Sector

posted in Product ● 17 Apr 2015

A survey of US based law firms has revealed that 89% of those surveyed utilise unencrypted email as the primary means of sharing confidential information. In addition, around half of the US-based law firms surveyed admitted to using free cloud-based file sharing services to transmit privileged information.

In the UK, the ICO investigated 173 legal firms with regards to Data Protection Act related issues last year, with roughly a third of these investigations concerning data security. If nothing else, this provides a clear indication that the UK’s legal sector is also facing clear data protection challenges.

The challenge for the legal sector is particularly difficult due to the requirement to share and collaborate with external parties on a regular basis whether those external parties are clients, other law firms or other third parties.

Thankfully there are robust solutions available today which can cost effectively meet the collaboration and sharing needs of the legal sector. Redstor’s Centrastor service, for example, provides organisations with access-anywhere cloud storage and enterprise file sync and share functionality.

By providing law firms’ employees with a safe means of accessing files on the move and sharing them both internally and with external parties, Centrastor drastically reduces the risk of data leakage. Whilst it might not be free, it can potentially save a law firm far more than it costs by preventing fines due to breaches of the Data Protection Act and reputational damage, which inevitably results in lost business.

Centrastor is one of a range of services offered by Redstor to the legal sector and wider private and public sectors. Other services include highly secure cloud backup, unified endpoint management, virtual disaster recovery as a service and enterprise on-premise IT solutions.
