Since the inception of the World Wide Web in 1990, users have had a platform in which to access and to deliver new and exciting content. However, keeping children safe from some of the darker content on the web can be challenging.
The safer Internet Centre, which was appointed in January 2011, aims to raise Awareness and be a helpline and hotline for those in need. Primarily through Safer Internet Day on the 7th February each year.
Safer Internet Day aims to raise awareness and help promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.
As a forward-thinking technology company Redstor has, since 1998, focused on managing secure and safe data sources. We have taken the time to understand the routes data traffic can take and successfully worked with organizations within education, the wider public sector and the commercial sector to keep data on the right track.
Safety and security are important aspects of Redstor’s philosophy, and we are a proud supporter of Safer Internet Day 2017. As part of our commitment to spreading this important message, I sat down with our own Raj Panchal, previously Lead Practitioner for a School Federation turned Public Sector Client Adviser, to discuss his time as an Assistant Head and what Safer Internet Day means to him.
“As a former Assistant Head Lead Practitioner, at a newly formed federation of schools, Safer Internet Day is something I’ve been celebrating throughout my career in education. My main duties were around heading up computing and IT and taking responsibility for pupil safety and pastoral care, so it tied in perfectly.”
“I now act as an ambassador and adviser for public sector organizations, helping them to ensure their digital safeguarding through cloud technologies – I’m still able to spread the message of safety and security.”
“My previous experience of Safer Internet Day, is that it gives a great opportunity to debate, discuss and be aware of technology in a positive light and to explore online behaviour. Giving children the skills to be safe and self-aware on the internet allows them to develop their independence because it’s something that can’t always be governed.”
“It does happen unfortunately and sometimes filters just can’t pick these things up. I’d always use it as a learning opportunity as it’s important not to just hide away from the issues. Sensitivity is important though, you have to be aware of the situation. The internet is an excellent tool to further learning and to tap into extra resources so it’s important to nurture the positive.”
As an organization committed to the safe use of the internet, Redstor offer E-safety and data protection reviews for schools and public sector organizations. As part of this Redstor look to educate and share knowledge in these areas, also working in partnership with Future Digital to provide online monitoring solutions.
Using the latest in cloud technology, Future Digital’s dynamic and intelligent active monitoring solutions support organizations in safeguarding users and ensuring that statutory obligations are being met, including under the prevent duty. Future Digital’s solutions ensure that leaders can oversee the safe use of technology when children and learners are in their care.
Featuring an intuitive user interface that visually displays problematic activity or behaviour and advanced incident management, Future Digital’s solutions ensure that safeguarding managers can instantaneously and easily identify potentially concerning incidents in the e-learning environment and take action immediately.
Together Redstor and Future Digital are united for a better, safer internet.
