A survey has revealed that many UK businesses have failed to prepare for the impending changes to EU Data Protection law. Responded to by over 850 Senior IT Decision Makers, it revealed that half of the UK respondents were unaware of the changes to EU Data Protection and only 10% understand the steps their organisation needs to take in order to be compliant.

Currently, UK businesses face a maximum fine of £500,000 from the ICO should they fail to adhere to data protection law. The proposed reform of EU Data Protection would mean that organisations would be monitored by a single governing body that has the power to impose fines of up to £100million or 5% of global turnover should they be found to be in breach of data protection rules; a significant impact upon all businesses.

The EU Data Protection reform aims to strengthen online privacy rights and better protect individuals than it currently does. The proposed changes include “the right to be forgotten”, whereby unless an organisation has a legitimate reason , they will be required to delete any data held on an individual.

The survey also revealed that 85% of respondents believe their organisation will face significant challenges in meeting these demands. For many organisations, the proposed change will add a further burden to already heavy IT workloads and tight budgets. To ensure safe and compliant change, IT managers will require a holistic overview of their entire IT estate. Having this wider view will enable IT managers to focus on only the changes required to remain compliant, rather than blindly and unnecessarily changing the entire IT estate, thus reducing the cost, time and effort involved.
