The ICO has issued an undertaking to Cardiff and Vale University Health Board for improvements to be made to staff training following a severe breach of the Data Protection Act. A Health Board employee was transporting sensitive documents home, including a patient’s medical health tribunal report, when the files were lost off the back of the bicycle. The health board does have in place secure, alternative means of data transportation such as encrypted portable devices and remote server access, therefore negating the need to transport the documents physically; however the employee was yet to receive training upon these solutions.
The ICO decided against a monetary fine, but considered that due to the sensitive information Health Boards handle that an overhaul of staff training procedures was required to ensure that a similar mistake would not occur again.
