Snapchat to heighten app security

posted in Cyber-Security ● 6 Jan 2014

Following a breach of nearly 5 million user accounts and phone numbers; Snapchat has announced plans to update the app and heighten security. The breach stemmed from the app’s ‘find friends’ feature which allows users to upload their address book to display user accounts which match the phone numbers in the users contacts.Succeeding the warning from Gibson Security, Snapchat claimed to have introduced various safeguards to prevent this occurring. Unfortunately, hackers were still able to appropriate the data and publish it online.Snapchat has since promised an update that allows users to opt-out of the ‘find friends’ search as well as updating other security features. However is it too little too late? The data breach has harmed the company’s image and the extent to which growth and company value has been affected is as yet unknown.Customer security should never come second and it is vital for companies to take this issue seriously. Data breaches can occur at any time and cause large amounts of negative media coverage and customer backlash. If found to be in breach of data protection, the company can face heavy fines and criminal prosecutions also. The Data Protection Act requires any personal information held by a company to be stored in an appropriate format.
