Personal data from the Electoral Register sold by councils

Personal data from the Electoral Register sold by councils

posted in Backup & Recovery ● 2 Sep 2013

Privacy pressure group, Big Brother Watch, revealed that councils have been selling data from the Electoral Register to private companies. 307 councils sold private, personal data to over 2700 companies between 2007 and 2012. The companies include estate agents, fast food outlets and lobbyists. It has been established that the profits generated exceed over £250,000. In one example, a council worker emailed himself over 2400 personal records with the intention of using them to market his new fitness firm.

This undermines trust in the council, and causes huge implications for the receivers of unwanted mail.
