How can a plane simply vanish?

The mystery of Flight MH370 has shocked the world. Numerous reports of potential debris and plane wreckage sightings have been investigated, but none have, as yet, been confirmed to have a connection to the missing flight.

The little black box (although bright orange in colour) is crucial in all plane investigations as it records flight data (FDR) and cockpit voice recordings (CVR). It is highly unlikely that we’ll be any wiser about what happened to the Boeing plane until this vital evidence is recovered. The black boxes emit radar signals for up to 30 days following a crash, so why is Flight MH370 untraceable? It is not usual for it to take weeks, months and even years to locate these boxes. For example, it took almost 2 years to locate both pieces of the black box of Flight Air France 447, which crashed in June 2009 and the FDR and CVR information from Flight Asiana Air 991, which crashed on July 28th 2011, is still to be found.

A question many should be asking is, “why keep such vital information on the plane, locked in box?” Should a disaster occur, all the critical information is in the wreckage and takes months to recover, or in some cases, it is completely lost! Passengers are offered wifi and are able to make calls onboard, so why do planes not constantly transmit their FDR and CVR data to control centres, such that this critical information is known at all times? This would drastically reduce the disaster recovery process.
