Is enough being done to protect children online?

Is enough being done to protect children online?

posted in Education ● 26 Mar 2014

Experts have called the Government’s Internet reform inadequate in protecting children online and are urging more to be done and Internet firms are being warned they may face heavy fines should they fail to show commitment to safeguarding children.  In the physical world, we are making really positive steps in protecting children from adult content, for example some retailers are blanking the covers of ‘top-shelf’ publications and ‘lad mags’ in order to stop young children being exposed to inappropriate content. So why is this not being implemented successfully online?

Adult sites and even social networking sites have extremely flimsy age verification techniques that often lead to younger children easily bypassing these and accessing the websites. Today, playground bullying often leads online after school hours through computers, mobiles and tablets, this possibility of 24/7 bullying can lead to children feeling they have no real safe place to escape. This is why keeping children safe online is so vital.  The non-physical signs of bullying can be hard to detect and often parents and teachers alike are unaware of the situation as the child is too frightened to confide in them or feel that they are responsible for, or deserve the bullying.

This is where Redstor can help.
